How guard rolling works

Guard Rolling or fender rolling consists of folding the inner lip of the wheel arch into a tighter ‘V’ shape or a completely flat ‘U’ shape to increase the space between the arch and the tyre.

Fitting wide, large-diameter wheels and tyres is a great way to enhance the look of your car, but it can lead to excessive tyre wear and tear without adequate tyre clearance. One simple way to create more room for the wheels and prevent tyre damage is to have the guards rolled or lipped.

The spot-welded double metal lip of the rear guards or the single-skinned lip of the front wheel arch can be pressed all the way around the inner side of the arch by using a rolling machine that bolts onto the wheel hub.

The guard rolling technique varies with each car and success depends on the condition of the paintwork or previous repairs to the area. If the paint is original, there is usually no cracking or paint damage.

Guard rolling price guide

Most guard rolling jobs are between $132 and $150 for a pair (non-mobile price) and take approximately an hour to complete. (Car club enquiries welcome). BMW rears with seam sealer removal are $180. Most Commodores VR to VFs are $150 except VT to VZ utes, wagons, statos, caprices, coupes are extra depending on the option of rolling you require. Most common Japanese cars like WRXs, Evos and Skylines start at $132.
